What are Empowerment Zones?

Empowerment Zones are economically distressed areas that have been targeted by legislation for economic growth promotion. EZ tax credits reward hiring employees who live and work in these areas.

Do I Qualify?

Most companies that employ anyone in an Empowerment Zone for 90 days or more qualify. Some exceptions do apply including employees of a golf course, country club, massage parlor, hot tub facility, tanning facility, gambling or alcohol-sales facility, farming businesses valued at $500,000 or more, or employees who own 5% or more of the company.

How Much is the Credit?

The Empowerment Zone credit is worth 20% of all qualified zone wages up to $15,000, a credit of up to $3,000 per qualified employee per year.
